So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. (Romans 9:16)
This scripture is not an invitation to spiritual passivity, laziness, or fatalistic thinking. Instead, it is a bold unveiling of the supernatural ecosystem of God, where mercy becomes the highest currency for destiny manifestation.
It reveals how the Kingdom of God operates:
• Human effort is limited → “For man looks at the outward appearance…” (1 Samuel 16:7)
• Human willpower is insufficient → “The flesh profits nothing…” (John 6:63)
• Human planning is imperfect → “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
• Human discipline hits ceilings → “By strength shall no man prevail.” (1 Samuel 2:9)
But into human limitation, God injects a force called MERCY, which introduces:
1. Divine Acceleration
God shortens processes:
“Yes, the Lord will perfect that which concerns me…” (Psalm 138:8)
2. Divine Exemption
God shields from what destroys others:
“When I see the blood, I will pass over you…” (Exodus 12:13)
3. Divine Open Doors
God grants access where doors should remain closed:
“…I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it…” (Revelation 3:8)
4. Divine Preservation
Your life is kept by divine insurance:
“…His truth shall be your shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4)
5. Divine Selection
He chooses the unlikely:
“God has chosen the foolish things… the weak things… the base things…” (1 Corinthians 1:27–28)
6. Divine Empowerment
He supplies what effort cannot:
“…Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit…” (Zechariah 4:6)
This verse reveals a Kingdom Operating System: Results do not manifest because of willpower… They manifest because God’s mercy overrides natural laws to elevate a person. Mercy is the invisible force that achieves what intelligence, talent, effort, and connections cannot.
Key Verses For Meditation
“I returned and saw under the sun that— The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11)
This is Solomon’s confession after analyzing human systems:
The fastest do not always win. The strongest do not always prevail. The wisest do not always prosper. The most skilled do not always rise. The missing ingredient is divine intervention.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it… (Psalm 127:1–2)
Together these scriptures unveil a Kingdom law:
Mercy + Favor + God's Sovereignty = Results Beyond Human Effort
Life Lessons
A. Human Effort Is Not the First Power.
Effort has a place. Scripture affirms diligence (Proverbs 22:29). But effort alone never guarantees results. Why?
Because:
• Life is spiritual
• Breakthroughs are from above
• Promotion is divine → “For promotion comes neither from the east nor the west… but God is the judge.” (Psalm 75:6–7)
Many run yet never arrive. Many will yet never possess. But mercy reaches into the back row and pulls people to the front.
Mercy is:
• The divine equalizer
• The divine elevator
• The divine advantage
• The divine accelerator
• The divine differentiator
Mercy makes your little look like abundance. Mercy makes your small steps produce massive outcomes. Mercy makes you look more strategic than you really are.
B. The Mercy of God Creates Supernatural Outcomes
When mercy invades your life:
• Processes shorten → “A short work will the Lord make…” (Romans 9:28)
• Delays break → “Shall I bring to birth and not cause to bring forth?” (Isaiah 66:9)
• Cycles collapse → “Affliction shall not rise up the second time.” (Nahum 1:9)
• Generational limitations dissolve → “He brought them out that He might bring them in…” (Deuteronomy 6:23)
• Human disqualifications overturn → “He raises the poor out of the dust…” (1 Samuel 2:8)
Mercy introduces divine surprises, sudden shifts, and supernatural upgrades.
C. The Mercy of God Overrides Human Disqualification
The Bible is a gallery of mercy-driven destinies:
1. Esther (Esther 2) A girl with no pedigree becomes queen by mercy.
2. Rahab (Joshua 2) A prostitute enters the lineage of Christ through mercy.
3. David (2 Samuel 12) A fallen king is restored by mercy instead of rejected.
4. Joseph (Genesis 41) A prisoner becomes prime minister by mercy.
5. Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46–52) He cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have MERCY on me!” and received sight.
6. The thief on the cross (Luke 23:42–43) One cry of mercy opened paradise.
Mercy specializes in lifting the unqualified and enthroning the unlikely.
D. Mercy Is What Prevents Burnout
People burn out because they believe results come from:
• Grinding
• Overworking
• Self-pressure
• Endless striving
• Comparison
• Performance anxiety
But scripture announces: “It is vain to rise early and sit up late…” (Psalm 127:2)
Mercy creates restful acceleration — advancement without chaos. Mercy gives:
• Peace with progress
• Strength without strain
• Success without sorrow
• Motion without frustration
Mercy is the oxygen that keeps you from suffocating under your assignment.
E. Mercy Makes You Stand Where Others Fall
Mercy stabilizes a destiny. People more intelligent may fail. People more connected may collapse. People with better opportunities may fall. But mercy strengthens your foundation. Mercy becomes your invisible support system.
God said: “I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
Mercy gives you storm-proofing. Mercy gives you crisis immunity. Mercy gives you divine resilience.
Things That Hinder Or Block The Flow Of Mercy
Even though mercy is God’s sovereign gift, scripture reveals postures, mindsets, and behaviours that resist, reduce, or block the flow of mercy in a person’s life. Mercy is free—but it is not cheap. It is abundant—but it is not automatic. Below are spiritual hindrances that close the gates of mercy.
1. Pride
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
Mercy flows downward. Pride raises a man above the posture where mercy can reach him. Pride turns a person into his own source—making mercy unnecessary and inaccessible. Pride is the spiritual declaration: “I don’t need God.”
2. Unforgiveness
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)
“For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.” (James 2:13)
Mercy cannot flow into a heart that refuses to release mercy to others. When you block mercy from someone else, you block mercy from yourself.
3. Hardened Hearts
“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…” (Hebrews 3:15)
A stubborn, unteachable heart shuts out the tender touch of mercy. A soft heart receives mercy; a hardened heart repels it.
4. Self-Righteousness
“And the tax collector… beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified…” (Luke 18:13–14)
Mercy comes to the needy, not the self-sufficient. Self-righteousness blinds a person to their need for God’s intervention.
5. Neglecting The Cry Of The Poor
“Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard.” (Proverbs 21:13)
Mercy closes to those who close their hearts to the needy. Mercy is a river—it flows toward those who release it outward.
6. Dishonour
“He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (Matthew 13:58)
Dishonour shuts down divine channels where mercy should flow through. Dishonour breaks spiritual connectivity. Dishonour dries environments of miracle and mercy.
7. A Life Of Unrepented Sin
“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)
Sin doesn’t stop God from loving you—but it stops you from receiving what His love provides. Mercy flows strongest where repentance is present.
8. Speaking Against God’s Ways
“Nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed…” (1 Corinthians 10:10)
Complaining, murmuring, and accusing God shuts down the flow of mercy. Gratitude attracts mercy; murmuring repels it.
9. Ignoring God’s Presence & Word
“For a long season, Israel… had no teaching priest and without law… but when in their trouble they turned to the Lord… He was found by them.” (2 Chronicles 15:3–4)
Mercy rides on obedience; disobedience dries its stream. Distance from God creates distance from mercy.
Practical Application Steps
1. Shift From Self-Reliance to God-Reliance
Declare daily: “Lord, I trust in Your mercy more than my gifts.”
2. Invite Mercy Into Every Area
Pray over:
• Family
• Finances
• Ministry
• Career
• Purpose
• Relationships
• Decisions
• Health
3. Replace Anxiety With Rest
Speak when pressure rises: “I enter divine rest by mercy.”
4. Cultivate Humility. Mercy flows to the humble:
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
5. Extend Mercy to Others
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)
6. Celebrate God's Sovereignty
Recognize every blessing as a gift from mercy, not merely effort.
7. Create a Mercy Journal
Record every moment where God intervened beyond your ability. This builds faith and awareness of divine fingerprints.
Reflection Questions
1. In what areas have I idolized effort over dependence on God?
2. How has striving replaced resting in God’s sovereignty in my life?
3. Where do I need supernatural acceleration that human effort cannot produce?
4. Who needs my mercy so I can continue to attract mercy?
5. What situation today requires the intervention of divine compassion?
Practical Illustration
Two runners start a race:
Runner A:
Trains harder, pushes more, sleeps less, strains continuously.
Runner B:
Trains well… but carries a divine hand on him that made him successful.
The difference is not their legs.
It is the hand. Mercy is that hand of God. It is the invisible force that allows ordinary people to outrun extraordinary obstacles. It is what made Elijah outrun Ahab’s horses (1 Kings 18:46).
It is what made Joseph outrun time. It is what made David outrun Goliath. It is what makes you outrun patterns, pain, and impossibilities.
Daily Challenge
Choose one area where you have been striving in your own strength. Spend 5 minutes in surrender and pray: “Lord, this area moves by Your mercy.” Then write one expectation and one scripture that anchors your trust.
Prayer
Father, I acknowledge that by strength shall no man prevail. I confess that my wisdom, effort, and plans cannot produce destiny without Your mercy. Let Your mercy rewrite my story, open my gates, restore my years, and elevate my life. Where I am weak, empower me. Where I am disqualified, qualify me. Where I am delayed, accelerate me. Where I have fallen, raise me.
Overshadow my efforts with Your mercy. Let Your mercy speak louder than judgment. Let Your mercy defend, uplift, and preserve me. I surrender my will, my running, and my striving to Your sovereign grace. Establish me in Your mercy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prophetic Declaration
“I decree by the covenant of mercy that:
Doors open for me. Battles bow before me. Cycles break around me. Delays collapse. Limitations dissolve. Disqualifications reverse.
The mercy of God lifts me to places effort cannot reach. From today, my life becomes a living testimony of Romans 9:16 — ‘It is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.’ I rise, I shine, I advance, and I conquer BY MERCY.”
“Mercy is God stepping into your story with a pen in His hand and rewriting chapters that effort could never redeem.”— MC CYRIL
Beloved
Step into this truth with boldness:
You are not a product of your past. You are not limited by your effort. You are not imprisoned by your qualifications. You are not defined by your weaknesses. You are carried by MERCY.
As you walk out of this revelation, may a new consciousness rise within you:
The consciousness that God Himself is your advantage. That the invisible hand of mercy is upon your life. That where others fall, you will stand.
Where others strive, you will soar. Where others struggle, you will flow. Where others wait, you will be accelerated.
By mercy, you will enter places your background did not prepare you for. By mercy, you will sit among kings your lineage never sat with. By mercy, you will accomplish assignments your strength cannot perform.
I call you into a new era of rest, grace, and divine elevation. A season where mercy becomes your signature. Where men look at your life and cannot explain your rising. Where the hand of God becomes your endorsement. Where mercy becomes your identity, your weapon, your climate, and your covering.
Step forward boldly.
Walk in this merciful wind. Let the God who shows mercy crown your journey with miracles. From today, rise—not by running.
Ascend—not by willing.
Advance—not by strategy.
Move—by MERCY.
